mestre Jorjão — que introduz elementos do funk carioca
à bateria — leva o povo ao delírio com Trevas! Luz! A
explosão do universo. Já a Beija-Flor de Nilópolis com
sua comissão de carnaval que reúne Laíla, Cid Carvalho,

n the country that, after innumerable economic
plans, adopts the Real as a stable national currency
during President Itamar Franco’s term – under
the command of the then Economy Minister, Fernando
Henrique Cardozo, later elected the thirty-fourth Brazil’s
president – Imperatriz Leopoldinense becomes the
first three-time champion of the Sambódromo era.
The samba school is proud of its parades, at the same
time original and luxurious, characteristic of its main
carnival-persons, as Arlindo Rodrigues, Viriato Ferreira
and Rosa Magalhães – who distinguished herself by
her style in which she unites modern daring to baroque
luxury. With the themes “Catarina de Médicis in the
Tupinambôs and Tabajéres court” and “I rather have a
d onkey that carries me than a camel that overthrows me,
there in Ceará”, she gives to Imperatriz (1994 and 1995)
the bi-championship, and repeats the success getting the

three-time championship in the years 1999, 2000 and
2001 with themes of long titles: “Brazil, show your face
at the ‘Theatrum Rerum Naturalium Brasiliae’”, “Who
discovered Brazil was Mr. Cabral on April 22, two
months after Carnival” and “ Caiana, purple, fita, black,
yellow sugarcane, Pernambuco, I want to see the juice
flow at the ganzá beat”.
In 2002, Max Lopes is back to the scene for another
championship for Mangueira in “Brazil with a z is for
‘cabras da peste’ (literally, goats of the plague), Brasil with
a s is Northeast Nation”. Other names became known
at the Carnival scenery, but almost everyone coming
from Fine Arts National School, Fernando Pamplona’s
pupils as Renato Lage, with his unmistakable “hi-tech
style”, adept to light and neon effects, who left his mark
at Mocidade Independente. It is from him the 1996
Carnival with the theme “Creator and Creature”.
Then at Viradouro, Joãosinho Trinta, at the side of
Master Jorjão – who introduces carioca funk elements to
the percussion drums - takes the people to ecstasy with
“Darkness! Light! The universe explosion”. And BeijaFlor de Nilópolis with its carnival comission that reunites
Laíla, Cid Carvalho, Shangai, Fran-Sérgio and Ubiratan
Silva is the 2003 champion with “The people tell their
history: An empty sack doesn’t stay upright – The hand
that makes the war, makes the peace”.
