Before we left, we agonised about the‘ Elegant Dining Nights’ and what we would wear. Easy for me, I bought a dinner suit; Kathleen took 3 dresses suitable for a formal evening. We noticed that the dress code in the formal dining room on ordinary nights was VERY informal. Baseball caps, sports shirts, shorts and even a set or two of clean dungarees. We decided as we’ d carried this posh stuff the best part of seven thousand miles we were going to wear it! Yes sure enough, on the night whilst some of the ladies were all dressed up I was the only man in a DJ. I was dreading somebody asking me for the wine list, however the dining room staff were impressed and very complimentary about the effort we’ d made.
What can you say about Alaska? It’ s cold, wet and miserable. It’ s got far too much scenery and wildlife for its own good. The locals are welcoming and the local beer is great( we visited a microbrewery!) We visited 3 ports Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Juneau is the only State capital that can’ t be accessed by road, only air and ferry. We saw black bears, bald eagles, whales and dolphins; all in the wild. One of the trips from the boat was a train ride up to a glacier. There was a snow fall which trapped the train so it had to be dug out and the passengers bussed back. A black bear that stood in front of the bus on the road scratching it’ s nether regions was definitely a good photo opportunity.
