a dry compartment) can both reduce the amount
of water used in each flush, saving up to 3L of
water per flush.
• Greywater reuse in toilets requires additional
pipes, pumps, a storage unit and a simple
treatment unit. It is costly to retrofit so include
this measure during the design phase.
Detecting leaks
Water leakage from toilets, faucets, or plumbing
fixtures can be responsible for as much as 30% of
water losses. Smart leak detectors placed on your
incoming water line are a great addition. These
devices can detect slow insidious leaks and burst
pipes, thereby shutting your water off and alerting
you to the problem.

Reusing grey water
Grey water is the generic term given to waste water
from showers, baths, washing machines and washhand basins in your home. Simple greywater systems
can be installed to immediately distribute the water
to the garden for irrigation. Properly treated and
stored, this water can also be recycled and reused for
flushing toilets.
When designing your home, incorporate
water-conserving devices or systems within the
specification, at little or no additional cost when part
of the initial build, which provide immediate cost
savings.
