Research Platforms' Performance Reports TMB 2015-2017 | Page 21
(a) Networking – Domestic and international
A systems biology network of experts has been established within Monash Australia, the IITB-Monash Academy and
Monash Malaysia with the following members:
Monash Australia:
• Dr Nguyen LK • Dr Mirana Ramialison • Professor Paul Hertzog • Professor Tony Purcell
IITB-Monash Academy:
• Dr Chetana Gavankar • Dr Bharath Muthukumar • Dr Vishwajeet Kumar
Monash Malaysia:
• Professor Maude Phipps • Dr Sharifha Syed Hassan • Dr Qasim Ayub • Dr Kirti Shukla
(b) Summer School Workshop Design
A Summer School Workshop has been designed for 2018-2019 for which the course content and hands on exercises
have been outlined.
(c) Student Engagement
Three Honours Students have been trained using funds from TMB on Systems Biology in 2017 and three new Honours
Students have enrolled for 2018 on Systems Biology related projects. Besides this two 3rd year research students have
been trained on gene detection strategies and two new 3rd year students have registered for 2018. Three PhD students
are currently conducting research on Systems Virology.
(d) Conference Presentations
Current progress on our Systems Biology research platform was showcased in oral presentations at the following
conferences this year:
1st Academia Sinica-Monash University Malaysia Bilateral Forum, Monash Malaysia 2017
2nd International Conference on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Kuala Lumpur 2017
Detailed Output for 2017
Host network generation: Host protein-protein interaction map has been generated using different databases like STRING
(Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting genes/ Proteins). STRING is a database of known and predicted protein
interactions. The interactions include direct (physical) and indirect (functional) associations. The database currently covers
5,214,234 proteins from 1133 organisms.
The interactions obtained are based on:
• Neighborhood
• Gene fusion
• Co-occurrence
• Co-expression
• Experiments
• Databases
• Text Mining
