Research Seminar Series 1/2017:
1. ‘Community of Inquiry Framework: Interrelationships
between Discipline and Personality in Blended
Classrooms’ by Dr Chan Chang Tik.
The study investigated the interrelationships between
discipline and personality in a blended classroom using
the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model. The study used
a non-experimental or qualitative design in particular,
a survey method utilising questionnaires and focus
group interviews on gathering data to answer a
research question.
2. ‘An Eye-tracking Investigation on Malaysian Muslim
Consumers’ Halal Product Choice Behaviour’ by
Associate Professor Yunus Ali.
This study addresses the question ‘How does a Muslim
consumer select a product?’ This presentation reported
empirical findings on Malaysia Muslim consumers’
visual product information-processing behaviour
to make a purchase decision. The study used eye-
tracking techniques at the Neuro-Business Behavioural
Laboratory at MUM. It monitored and recorded
participants’ eye gaze movement and gaze fixation on
different information cues on a product package including
Halal logo, country of origin, brand name and ingredient
panel that generally influence purchase decisions.

Research Seminar Series 3/2017: ‘Sustainable Development:
Prospects and Challenges for Asia’ by Professor Gamini Herath
The aim of this seminar was to discuss the concept of
sustainable development (SD) which has now been widely
accepted as the most desirable form of development
in Asia.
GA21 Lunchtime Talk: ‘Evidence Synthesis in Social Science &
Health Science’ by Dr Mukdarut Bangpan
The talk focused on the systematic review methodology
which has been developed by the Evidence-Informed Policy
and Practice Information and Coordinating Centre (EPPI-
Centre, https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/cms/) at the Department
of Social Science, UCL Institute of Education. The EPPI-
Centre work spans the evidence synthesis approaches
to make use of both of the methods for assessing the
likelihood of causal relationships and those for advancing
understanding of different social perspectives.
Research Seminar Series 2/2017:
1. ‘Remittances, Institutional Quality, and Economic Growth
in Malaysia’ by Associate Professor Poon Wai Ching.
This paper investigates the role of institutions in
influencing the effect of remittances on Malaysia’s
capacity in its long-run economic growth over the period
1984-2014.

2. ‘I want a share of the Muslim travel market: An exploratory
study on travel agencies’ service offerings’ by Dr Elaine
Chew Yin Teng.
This study explores the service offerings by travel
agencies in Malaysia in their attempts to capture the
growing market segment of Muslim leisure travel.
Semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 20 travel
agencies in Malaysia revealed that there are three
service offerings in the tourism market, of which two are
