International Symposium on Autism
14 October 2017
Organisers: Professor Ishwar Parhar and Dr Takayoshi Ubuka
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterised by deficits in social interaction and restricted, repetitive patterns
of behaviour. The cause of autism is not understood, even if a number of genetic and environmental risk factors have
been proposed. This symposium aimed to gather the experts in autism from the Asia-Oceania region in an attempt
to understand the cause of autism and discuss its effective treatment methods. Held on 14 October 2017, the event
saw experts from Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia giving insights into some of the advanced
therapeutic, clinical and basic knowledge on autism. The symposium attracted various professionals in the fields of
special care education, psychology, psychiatry, paediatrics as well as individuals with autistic family members. A total of
73 participants, 9 international speakers and 2 local speakers from Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia and The National
Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) attended the event.
