International Symposium on Autism 14 October 2017 Organisers: Professor Ishwar Parhar and Dr Takayoshi Ubuka Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterised by deficits in social interaction and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour. The cause of autism is not understood, even if a number of genetic and environmental risk factors have been proposed. This symposium aimed to gather the experts in autism from the Asia-Oceania region in an attempt to understand the cause of autism and discuss its effective treatment methods. Held on 14 October 2017, the event saw experts from Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia giving insights into some of the advanced therapeutic, clinical and basic knowledge on autism. The symposium attracted various professionals in the fields of special care education, psychology, psychiatry, paediatrics as well as individuals with autistic family members. A total of 73 participants, 9 international speakers and 2 local speakers from Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia and The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) attended the event. 24
