ello » Welcome As exercise professionals, it is easy to set our sights on who we want to coach and on our ‘ideal’ client. With the emergence of boutique fitness facilities and class experiences, we can often get blindsided into thinking the super fit and fashionable Generation Z and Millennials are the perfect clients we should be looking for and providing services to. However, we would be foolish to think this. Surely the people who need our coaching are those outside of these parameters, who have never been taught how to train or perform exercise correctly and who may need guidance to help them achieve their desired results. You will notice a recurring theme in this issue around the older adult. I remember the first health club I worked in where over 80% of the membership were ‘Baby Boomers’ – adults aged over 50. I couldn’t have been more wrong! Within a short space of time my books were full and I had a bustling client base of older adults wanting my help and guidance to coach them to healthier and more active lives. I learnt more from my time in that gym than any other employment as a coach (and that includes my time coaching athletes). I even coached a 75-year-old client to reach the peak of Kilimanjaro! The moral of the story is that we should be setting our sights on helping as many people as we can. To do this we need to be able to plan coaching activities so we deliver sessions with confidence and understand different participants’ needs.
