progressing. Most monitors incorporate several games designed to help you modulate your intensity of stroke, or to maintain power and tempo. There’s also apps which allow you to record distances and times, and compare your achievements with those of others. Major manufacturers like Concept 2 and WaterRower will also allow you to link your account to wider fitness apps. The pick of the apps is LiveRowing, which allows you to connect your iOS device to the Concept 2, via Bluetooth if using the latest PM5 monitor or by cable if using one of the older monitors. You can then use the app to build custom workouts or training plans, compete with friends and join in global challenges. An Android version of the app is in the pipeline. Distance challenges are another good source of motivation. British Rowing’s range of challenges includes ‘rowing’ the length of the Boat Race course, the USA’s iconic Route 66, or even the distance across the Atlantic. Online challenges include World Rowing’s World Erg Challenge, a team event running every March to April, and the Concept2 Monthly Challenge group on Facebook. There are also charity fundraising challenges such as the Cancer Research UK Workplace Challenge (workplacechallenge.org.uk/ rowing). For those who prefer the buzz of real-world competition, there’s a growing number of indoor rowing events throughout the UK. These culminate in the British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) held each December. Many events have categories for all ages and abilities and races range from 500-metre sprints to team relays. If you want to develop your training skills, British Rowing has recently launched the new REPs-accredited Go Row Indoor workshop aimed at fitness professionals. It equips participants with the skills to work with individual clients, to run group rowing sessions and to run Go Row Indoor rowing class 20-, 30- and 45-minute models. ‘ Rowing is a leg-driven exercise, with the leg muscles and gluteals providing 60% of the power. GO ROW INDOOR Go Row Indoor is British Rowing’s indoor rowing programme that wants to get more people active on the indoor rowing machine and make them feel connected to the wider sport. Be part of the next big thing to help retain and attract new clients through indoor rowing. Head to the British Rowing website to find out more: www.britishrowing.org/indoor-rowing @REPsUK FM 15
