MELBOURNE ART TRAMS
Melbourne is known for its culture and its trams.
Only in Melbourne could these come together to
create this new tradition for modern times.
Now in its fifth year, Melbourne Art Trams sees
eight Victorian artists commissioned to have
their design applied to these moving canvases,
launching with the Festival and running on the
network for six months.
Melbourne Art Trams is art at scale. It brings art
out of galleries and—literally—on to the streets.
It provides artists a platform with which to
communicate with community on a scale they
could never otherwise achieve.
For the first time a designated community
tram was designed by school children and
their parents, from St Albans Heights Primary
School’s Community Hub.
A key strategic priority from Creative Victoria’s
Melbourne as a Global Cultural Destination
report is to improve collaboration between
organisations and institutions. Melbourne
Art Trams proudly brings together Creative
Victoria, Public Transport Victoria, Yarra
Trams and Melbourne Festival in creative
collaboration, delivering on this goal.
