In Pamplona , the Navarra Anti-racist Coordinating Committee held a demonstration that stretched from the plaza del Baluarte to the plaza del Castillo , with the aim of advocating “ guaranteed rights for all people ”.
Within the manifesto presented , the organisers highlighted the significance behind the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination , recalling the tragic Sharpeville massacre . On 21 March 1960 , in the town of Sharpeville in South Africa , the police force used violence , firing on a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid regime , resulting in the murder of 69 people . The United Nations General Assembly designated 21 March as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination . This designation included a call to Member States to intensify their efforts to eradicate all manifestations of racism in its various forms . The Pamplona demonstration underlined how sadly , although 55 years have passed since that episode , the same racism that triggered it is still present , rooted in the social , political and economic structure in various parts of the world .

Description
On 26 June 2022 , demonstrations were called in different cities in Spain against “ the Melilla massacre ”, referring to the tragedy in which 37 people lost their lives trying to climb over the Melilla fence from the city of Nador . It is the biggest tragedy recorded at the border to date . Up to 2,000 people -mostly Sudanese- tried to cross the border between Spain and Morocco that day , through the Barrio Chino border crossing point . According to Amnesty International , the number of missing people is estimated at around 100 , so the exact number of those killed in the massacre is still unknown . The Spanish police returned some 470 people to Morocco , without guarantees or medical assistance , and 87 were detained in Nador and other prisons in the country .
