2021
SOS Racismo Bizkaia , Navarra Anti-racist Coordinating Committee and various anti-racist groups
Description
Various demonstrations took place in Basque cities as a way of condemning racial discrimination in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination , while at all times complying with prevention measures against the pandemic .
In the province of Guipuzkoa , the March against Racism took place . This event linked the towns of Pasaia and San Sebastian . Under the slogan “ Tu papel es importante ” [ in English , “ Your role is important ”] [ in Spanish “ papel ” means both “ role ” and “ paper ”], the participants in this demonstration exposed the situation of vulnerability experienced by migrants , who are deprived of various fundamental rights .
The organisers of these mobilisations highlighted the relevance of regularising the legal status of migrants , also known as obtaining “ papers ”. In parallel , this slogan seeks to highlight the role of local residents in combating stereotypes and prejudices faced by migrants .
In the city of Bilbao , a congregation of hundreds of people staged a demonstration that stretched from the San Francisco area to the City Hall building . The call for this demonstration came from the SOS Racismo Bizkaia collective . They focused especially on the difficulties encountered by migrants when looking for housing . Using slogans such as “ El racismo nos priva de un techo ” (“ Racism deprives us of a roof over our heads ”), they expressed their discontent in relation to this problem .
