Report | Reparation for colonialism and slavery in Spain 2 | Page 20

In these mobilisations , we highlight the importance of 1992 , which we consider a key date for anti-colonial action in the state . The celebration of the 5th centenary generated numerous rallies protesting against hegemonic narratives of the past . The tragic murder of Lucrecia Pérez in Madrid raised public awareness of the repercussions of racism in Spanish society . In Catalonia , the movement for the removal and repatriation of the so-called " negre de Banyoles " [ black man from Banyoles ], which coincided with the Barcelona Olympic Games , also triggered profound debates about colonial pasts . These initiatives have been recorded in a contextual manner and with chronological continuity , alongside others of media and commemorative relevance .
These manifestations of protest form the basis on which the anti-colonial movement , historical criticism and demands for laws and reparation measures are developed . They reflect the current tensions inherent in the imperial legacy , through discourses on racism , inequality , immigration laws , the lack of historical role models for communities and their struggles , and the marginalisation of critical narratives .
