Atrial Fibrilation( AFib)
AFib is a heart rhythm disorder that means you have an irregular heart rate. This can increase the risk of a blood clot and a stroke.
Previous Stroke or TIA
If you have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack( TIA), you are at an increased risk of having another stroke.
Medication Compliance Continue taking all of your medications as prescribed. Do not stop taking any medications without first checking with your doctor.
High Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fatty substance in your blood. High levels of this can clog your arteries. LDL is the‘ bad cholesterol,’ that you want to keep low. Aim for an LDL under 70mg / dL.
Smoking or Tobacco Use
Smoking and tobacco use damage your blood vessels and increase your risk of clots.
Drug and Alcohol Use
Using illicit drugs increases your risk of having a stroke. Also, excessive alcohol use can increase this risk.
Carotid Artery Disease
Plaques can clog your blood vessels. This narrows your arteries and can increase the risk of stroke.
Obesity and Inactivity
Obesity and inactivity increase your risk. Even losing 5 or 10 pounds can reduce your risk of a stroke, and regular physical exercise can also reduce this risk.
Diet
Reducing your sodium, saturated and trans fat, and cholesterol intake can reduce your risk of a stroke.
Diabetes
Managing your blood sugars is important. Taking your medications and keeping your blood sugar under control can reduce your stroke risk.
