Therapies to help you recover after a stroke

Recovery after a stroke is possible. Depending on your recovery needs, you might have different therapy teams to help you.

Physical Therapy

This therapy helps you improve your strength and range of motion, as well as helps you with things like walking.
If you need assistive devices such as a walker, cane, wheelchair, or other devices, this team will help you learn how to use them.
This team of therapists will give you a personalized plan to continue working on things like moving and balance.
Your therapist might give you exercises to work on at home to help improve your recovery.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy will help you re-learn different motor skills and teach you how to complete everyday tasks like eating, dressing, writing, and bathing yourself.
This team of therapists will help you come up with changes that you can make and a specific plan for you to regain independence.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapists might work with you to help improve your ability to speak, write, read, and with swallowing difficulties( dysphagia).
A cognitive evaluation might be completed, which tests different skills like reasoning, memory, and language.
Speech Therapists might do a type of swallow study to see how you are swallowing and ensure you have a diet that reduces your risk of choking.
