How a Stroke Affects Communication

Depending on the affected area of the brain, it can cause problems with communication or speech. There are different types of communication difficulties you might have after having a stroke.
Aphasia
There are three different types of aphasia that can make communication difficult after having a stroke.
1. Expressive Aphasia: People will know what they want to say but have trouble getting the right words out. 2. Receptive Aphasia: A person will have trouble understanding what other people are saying. 3. Global aphasia: Those with global aphasia might have difficulty understanding what other people are saying, speaking, and following commands.
Dysarthria
Dysarthria can make it difficult for someone to control the muscles of their face, tongue, or mouth. People might understand what they want and what others say but might have slurred or muffled speech.
Apraxia
Apraxia can cause difficulty speaking, but it can also cause one to have trouble reading and writing.
