The Kitchen

Nestled in a peaceful rural setting, the Sandpiper Kitchen was designed for a retired couple seeking a home that felt warm, welcoming, and deeply connected to its surroundings. While the original kitchen offered generous square footage, it lacked the character, functionality, and sense of comfort the homeowners envisioned for this next chapter of their lives.
With no plans to move, they wanted to invest in a kitchen that would support them for years to come. The design needed to balance accessibility, comfort, and practicality while creating a beautiful space for cooking, entertaining, and gathering with family and friends. Inspired by modern country design, the homeowners wanted a space that felt timeless rather than trend-driven.
One of the project’ s greatest challenges was preserving what was already working well. The homeowners wished to retain the existing stone flooring throughout the main living areas, avoiding the cost, disruption, and environmental impact of replacing it. Existing plumbing locations were also maintained wherever possible, meaning the new kitchen needed to remain largely within the original footprint.
Rather than viewing these constraints as limitations, the design embraced them as opportunities. Through thoughtful space planning, custom storage solutions, and strategic reconfiguration of cabinetry and work zones, the kitchen was completely transformed while respecting the home’ s architecture, budget, and existing materials. The result proves that exceptional design is not always about starting from scratch. Sometimes the greatest success lies in working intelligently within existing conditions to create a space that feels entirely new.
Inspired by modern farmhouses, traditional country homes, and relaxed coastal living, the design balances timeless craftsmanship with contemporary functionality. Natural materials, layered textures, and carefully considered details create an atmosphere that feels refined yet approachable.
One of the defining architectural features is the fully wrapped wood ceiling with exposed beams. Extending across the kitchen, it introduces warmth, scale, and character while visually connecting the interior to the surrounding landscape. The rich wood tones are complemented by a handcrafted copper farmhouse sink and custom copper range hood, both of which serve as striking focal points.
