Why Conway folks wear teal on Tuesdays
Conway residents show their support not only for the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers , but also for everything CCU on Tuesdays when they don the school ’ s color of teal .
Teal Tuesday is a great opportunity for not only the campus community , but also the community at large to celebrate all things CCU .
The tradition began in 2012 and just keeps getting stronger .
The school ’ s mascot is teal , the on-campus fire hydrants are teal , and even the football field turf is teal , according to the school ’ s website .
The school ’ s colors , teal and bronze , represent the sea and the sand .
It ’ s just a way for everybody to come together every week on a Tuesday to celebrate Coastal and all that it means to Teal Nation and the local area as well .
On Teal Tuesday everyone on campus and in the community at large , alumni and the community , dress up in anything with teal as the dominant color .
At times , the school ’ s social media team encourages people to submit pictures of themselves wearing teal and the pictures just might be posted on the school ’ s website .
“ We get pictures from all over the country , especially from alumni ,” said Jerry Rashid , the school ’ s information officer .
The tradition quickly spread throughout Conway .
Hillary Howard , director of Conway Downtown Alive said , “ Tuesdays are Teal in Conway ! Each Tuesday in Downtown Conway and throughout the City everyone is encouraged to wear teal . This tradition started on the CCU campus and has spread into our community . It is a great way to show support for our hometown university and the outstanding students and faculty that continue to grow the reach of Coastal Carolina University .”
The city ’ s entrepreneurs have also joined the fun . Tracy Pickens , one of the owners of The Haberdashery and Herdashery in Downtown Conway said , “ Coastal
Carolina University is a huge part of our community . Teal Tuesday gives us a day every week to celebrate and keep Teal Nation in the forefront of the minds of our community .
The Haberdashery ’ s focus is to stock upscale teal clothing and accessories so everyone can celebrate with the Chanticleers .
On Tuesdays the store ’ s staff dresses in teal frequently drawing questions about their choice of the color .
“ We tell them that Teal Tuesday is our local college ’ s day of recognition and they seem to like it a lot that we do it ,” Pickens said .
Pickens said teal is a great color , people like it and it sells well .
At times , they have giveaways for people dressed in teal on Tuesdays .
The store ’ s co-owner Russell Fowler is a Coastal graduate and the two owners together have four children , who graduated from CCU .
