Holi
in Boston
Holi is a huge festival in India celebrating the beginning of Spring, the salvation of Prahlada, and Krishna’s prank of throwing colored powder. Aakruti Jagmohan is a student in Boston that came from Bangalore, India to study Journalism.
During Holi, people will come together without paying attention to castes, classes, or family names. People throw colored powder—more recently mixed with water—playing, singing, and then eat together.
This year she celebrated in Boston University, and while she had fun, she tells us it is very different from the way it is celebrated in India.
Back home, people pray to Krishna and eat sweets that he liked. They offer up a bowl of butter for him and sing praises to him and Radha. “I think for Indians culture is very important, preserving their heritage.” She says this feeling increases as more and more kids have the opportunity to leave the country for studies or other reasons.
