MYLES MURRAY
RELAY RACING CHAMPION
WITH TEAM YOUNG MONEY
M
BY NANCY HARRISON
yles Murray will celebrate his 25th Birthday on
May 12. He has a new baby daughter, Blakely
who is 2 months old. When he thinks about what he
has accomplished in his life, he remembers his Uncle
Bup, Relay Racing Champion who died while Myles
was in high school. He also thinks about his Uncle L.P.
who was injured in a n auto accident in 2002 which
left him disabled. Both uncles encouraged and in-
spired Myles to become a Relay Racer. Watching these
men compete and win races as a young boy growing
up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning
Montana gave him the goal to ride and race and now
he’s living that dream.
Losing his Uncle Bup was a shock to the entire Murray
Family and they stopped spending time together doing
fun things. Myles’ dream of
racing was encouraged by his
Grandmother Carol Murray,
who bought some horses
for him to ride and train, so
he was able to start racing
in 2011. Going to the races
brought the family back to-
gether again as they cheered
for Young Money to win. And
win they did – all over the
Mountain States of the US and
in Alberta, Canada.
Myles now keeps 6 horses,
4 of which are his favorites.
With names like Lulu and
Teletubby, Myles values his horses and enjoys riding
and training them.
Myles also competes in the Warrior’s Race and the
Chief’s Races. He has won the Warrior’s Race in Black-
foot, Idaho, Brocket and Standoff, Alberta; the Chief’s
Race twice in Brocket and in Standoff, Alberta as well
as Pine Ridge, SD. Young Money won the Canadian
Championship in 2017; they’re 5-time winners of
Brocket, Alberta, 2-time Champion of Standoff, Alber-
ta, 2-times Strathmore; winners of the Kalispell Fair
Championship in 2017, Blackfoot, ID 2017; 2016; the
Fort Hall Festival Championship; won Running with
the Warriors Race in Pine Ridge, SD. Myles’ horse
Teletubby won Horse of the Year at the Champion-
ship of Champions in Billings, MT in 2017.
Carol and John Murray are
sponsors of the Young Money
Team; they have raised and
trained horses for the whole
lives. They have been part
of organizing and supporting
Indian Relay over the years.
Carol currently serves as
Vice President of the Horse
Nations Indian Relay Coun-
cil. Their first event in the
2018 Season is being held in
Gillette, WY at Camplex. The
Cloud Peak Tour of Champi-
ons will take place May 26,27,
2018. Tickets are available
at the Camplex Ticket Office. You can bet the Mur-
ray Family will be there rooting for their team and
supporting Indian Relay Races from North and South
Dakota to Montana, Idaho and Oregon and up into
Canada. It’s part of the culture of the Horse Nations
and the Blackfeet Nation. And, Myles will be think-
ing about his Uncle Bup who is watching over him
and rooting for his safety and for the win.
