RACE

FOR 2017

IS LOGAN RED CROW

BY NANCY HARRISON

Logan Red Crow is looking forward to graduation from Strathmore High School on May 26 . She is working on plans to attend college this fall where she wants to study anatomy .

Logan ’ s Uncle Thomas Many Guns introduced her to horseback riding at the age of 8 . He had an Indian Relay Team when she was growing up called Okan Warrior . He competed all over Canada in 2016 and attended the All Nations Indian Relay Championships in Billings , MT in 2016 . He was invited to race at the Calgary Stampede in 2017 ; Okan Warriors placed fourth .
Logan ’ s father , Allison Red Crow is a rancher , stock contractor , horse trainer and a stunt man in western movies . He was part of the Okan Warriors Relay Team also before starting his own Relay Team – Old Sun . Her mom , Jayme Big Snake , is a dental assistant and competes in Maiden ’ s Races .
Logan started practicing horse racing at age 15 at her uncle suggestion , riding with a saddle for many years . Now she rides bareback like the racers in the USA ride . She says her biggest challenge is “ lazy horses ” who don ’ t want to work out ! She tells them “ If you guys will work out , I will work out also !” Her two horses are named Stitch and Jack . Logan says before relay racing she used to rodeo in barrel racing , pole bending
and steer riding . She also plays hockey . In the 2016 / 17 Season her hockey team qualified for Alberta Hockey Provincials and placed Third . In 2018 , her team won the South Midget A Banner ; and an Bronze Medal in the Alberta Treaty Hockey Tournament . Logan won Player of the Game at the Wickfest World Hockey and a Gold Medal in the Alberta Native Hockey Provincials in Edmonton . She also attends her school ’ s Hockey Academy and snowboards , and , in her spare time , she ’ s also a runner !
Logan belongs to the Siksika Nation of Alberta which was originally Blackfoot . The population of the Siksika Nation is under 7,000 with around half of those living on reserves in Alberta . They share heritage with the Blackfoot Nations in the USA , including traditional Indian Relay Racing and other horse racing events . Logan grew up with her parents and one brother , Racey Big Snake who is a fitness trainer .
Logan reports that her Uncle Thomas passed away in November 2017 after watching her win the Championship in October . He told her how happy he was and later shared with her father how far she had come and how he was very proud of her . Logan will keep these words close to her heart as she runs again for the win . We wish her good luck and hope to see her at an HNIRC event in 2018 .
