T
he 2018 Canadian Indian Relay Association season
will be another one for the history books. This year
we have more events planned and have expanded into
Saskatchewan. Our schedule will begin June 9 with
an event being held almost every weekend until our
championship, September 7-9. We have signed a five-
year agreement to host the Canadian Championships
in Lethbridge Alberta. This allows us to plan well in
advance and to begin promoting very early. The news
from the nations is that many new teams are forming
which will increase the program. We are inviting the
USA teams to compete as we had only one purchase
a membership in 2017 and were very successful. We
have also added a USA Rep to our executive board
(Harold Wippert). To accommodate the growth we will
also increase the number of teams that will qualify for
the championships. The plan will be to double from 12
to 24 teams. The Chief race will have an age limit of 35
and older and must wear a headdress. The horse used
will be one of the following: paint, roan or appaloosa
and will be the most colorful and decorated event we
will feature. We will also introduce a Little Braves race
for 13 years and under. Depending on the size of horse
(pony or regular size) they will run either run 1 furlong
or more (1 lap). The other addition to this year’s cham-
pionship will be to have native competition dancing
rather then a demonstration. Attached is a member-
ship application you can download, scan and email
back to CIRRA.
