In 2017 Maguire was busy, riding at Calgary
for the O’kan Warriors relay team, and riding
Chief race at CIRRA races. His accomplish-
ments for the CIRRA season include winning
the Chief race in Hobbema both days, and
the Warrior race the first day and second the
second day; both Brocket and Standoff were
not great races for him. Coming into the finals
in Lethbridge, Alberta the team acquired a
new horse, Solar NASA, or fondly known as
“Charlie.” The first day, “Charlie”, a four-year
old gelding off the track, had never experience
a standing start and was last off the start. He
was dead last still at the half-way mark, but
then he kicked in and started passing horses,
surging to the lead to win his first Chief race.
The second day, “Charlie” was prepared and
took the lead form the start and raced home
to win the finals. The 23-year old says it
took some time for it to sink in that he had
won and was the CIRRA Champion.
“CIRRA did a great job at the finals, shows ap-
preciation to the members, and works hard
to get more races, says Maguire. I would like
to see it keep going.”
Maguire would like to give all his credit to
“Charlie” and to the late Thomas Many Guns.
He gave the buckle to Many Guns that day
and it will be with him forever.
