Industrial Intervention
Using the outer walls of disused and battered shipping containers, I have designed industrial style clothes fitting rooms, in keeping with the shop’s urban style. Taking
the floor of the containers out I have avoided the need for a ramp, whilst maintaining structural stability via 3 supports connecting opposite outer walls. Not only
is this a sustainable choice by preventing something from becoming waste, it takes on the concept of the store in proving ‘rubbish’ to be beautiful and useful. It also
serves to remind those who visit the shop how much fashion enters the UK from overseas. By using containers the need for interior walls is avoided, but privacy
and the separation of space between shopping and trying on clothes is still maintained. In making these a trendy and stylish intervention, users are made to enjoy the
whole experience of shopping and are encouraged to enjoy and try on clothing, thus increasing sales. In positioning the shop’s logo, positive messages and messages of
sustainability within the cubicles, and opting for individual mirror lighting, visitors to the shop are quite literally flattered. This means that any pictures taken and posted
on social media and the experience as a whole encourages them and other users into the store, whilst spreading the message of stylish sustainability.
Whilst creating fitting rooms on the first and second floor, an old shipping container is also used as a method of clothing display, on the ground floor. Forming two
separate displays, this acts to encourage circulation, create exciting and interesting display methods and avoids the need for interior walls or partitions.
BOX PARK CROYDON- Constructed entirely from refitted shipping containers, Boxpark is the worlds first pop up mall. Combining shopping, bars and dining this
unique structure has taken the concept of the street market and transformed it into a stylish and urban setting, so popular that this has now become one of three
across London. Proving the demand and appreciation for shipping container structures, the success of Boxpark highlights how a simple shipping container can create
a trendy and exciting intervention, bringing business and attention.
