Materials: Due to the sensitive location
and age of the property, materials were
chosen to match the surroundings, with
slate roof and stone walls. However, the
opportunity was taken to incorporate
large areas of glazing to increase the
sense of light and space, and take
advantage of the magnificent views.
Sustainability: Using traditional local
materials is a sustainable from of
building, as they are readily available
and do not have to be manufactured
or transported long distances. The
local labour force is also familiar with
their use, which facilitates the build.
The fabric of the new accommodation
was insulated to exceed the current
Building Regulations, with the walls
designed to have a maximum U-value
