The man looks onwards and gets lost in a sea of memories. He thinks
of his wife, and how they would stand together in this field and talk
to each other lovingly as they would take turns calling the sheep.
He becomes overwhelmed with warmth on the inside. He lets out a
laugh, the first laugh he has let out in a long time. He remembers her
running, her golden hair being blown in every direction and her smile
which lit up the darkest of rooms. He remembers how she told him “to
keep living for the animals and how he was all they had”, It was
something he had to live for, all he really had to live for.
John begins to call to the sheep - this was his way of letting them
know he had food. He stays and watches them for a while, then gets
up to leave. The sheep respond and begin to run up to him. They are
his friends. In fact, they are all this poor man has left. They say their
goodbyes and the man sets off again, back to reality, back to the
loneliness of his house. But he has tomorrow to look forward to. He
will be back to see his friends tomorrow. He will have a reason to
continue to get up and out of bed. He will also have a reason to
continue to live.
