resident sharks patrolling the front
section of this reef.
When you’re ballooning from the
Two Mile Reef you don’t need a long
drift to find the fish. As soon as our
skip baits reached the strike zone,
which was approximately 100m out,
the mackerel were launching clean
out of the water and grabbing our
baits in mid air. We lost a couple of
fish to the sharks and landed some
good quality mackerel ranging from
10-18kg, however the fish of the day
belonged to Max Godfroy.
Young Max hooked a monster fish
that took a real blistering run. You
know you’ve got a serious mackerel
on your line when it suddenly turns
around and peels off for a second
run. With all this commotion in the
water the sharks quickly honed in.
Max cranked down on his reel like
a man possessed and managed to
drag the fish to the base of the rocks.
James reached out with the gaff and
pinned the fish, however a 1.5m reef
shark also grabbed the big mackerel
while it was still in the wash. Now we
had a real battle on our hands to see
who wanted this fish more. James did
extremely well to hang on to the gaff
and the boys dragged up a cracker
29kg bar-ee that was sporting a few
battle scars. Max was ecstatic with
his capture and a Spanish mackerel
of this calibre is what we commonly
refer to as a trip maker.
