Any sports fisho who spends a lot of
their spare time chasing these often-
painful species will attest to the fact
that barramundi have a unique way
of destroying terminal tackle. Mix that
in with their ability to jump and throw
hooks and you can get an idea of the
challenges and importance of hook
choice when targeting barramundi.
One area in which I have been finding
the smaller 2/0 Mustad Kaiju Inline
Singles useful is on the headlands when
retrofitting them to the Zerek Longtrail
lure. Firstly, I choose the Longtrail as it’s
the ideal garfish profile and it also lends
itself to taking a mixture of inline singles

and trebles. On these lures three hook
rings are present; the front, middle
and rear. I run an inline single on the
front and rear and a Saltism 4x Mustad
treble on the belly. When targeting the
headlands, we can encounter a range
of species from jacks, fingermark, barra,
cod, tarpon, mackerel and tuskies just to
name a few, so having a well-balanced
hook set up can benefit the angler and
increase success rates.
Soft vibes. I know what you are
thinking. We already miss a lot of hits
on these lures with the six hook points.
Why on earth would you reduce the
hook presentation of two trebles? To
keep connected when you are sure of a
committed bite, that’s why. This may be
a tad presumptuous, but the two spots
in which we target large saltwater
