Doorknocking and phone work aren’ t trendy, he admitted, but they’ re repeatable.
“ Ninetyfive percent of people never want to do that, because it involves rejection,” Ford said. He opts in. Ford’ s base is Metro Detroit—“ Detroit proper and all the suburbs around it, also including Ann Arbor”— but his footprint extends across Michigan via his organization at eXp Realty, with teams from Grand Rapids and Lansing to Saginaw, Flint, and even Toledo. The model lets him scale without diluting a simple edge: discipline.
“ Show up every day and treat your real estate business like a business, not a hobby,” he said.
Inside the business, Ford’ s most important partnership sits across the kitchen table. Working with his wife, Joy, took trial and error.
“ I don’ t know if I fired her or she quit the first time,” he joked of their early attempt.
They regrouped— she ran transactions and admin for years, then earned her license two and a half years ago.
“ She works with all of our buyers … I handle all of the listings,” he said.“ We’ ve learned where each other’ s strengths are … and we love working together.”
Why eXp? Ford is as candid about that choice as he is about everything else.“ I really felt like God told me that’ s where he wanted me to be,” he said.
The rest is business logic: a cloud brokerage present in all 50 states and multiple countries, with revenue share and stock programs inside a“ debtfree” platform.
“ I didn’ t have to come join a company that might not make it down the road,” he said.
Ford’ s definition of“ team” isn’ t purely transactional.
“ What differentiates us … is our approach not only to help people sell a lot of homes and make a lot of money, it’ s also to help them live great lives,” he said.
He screens for culture and invests in skills:“ We want our agents to be the most professional, best agents in the market … and also help them create success in their own life.”
That wider lens shows up beyond
production. Ford’ s book,“ Unleashed: Seven Key Principles to Breaking Free and Breaking Through,” distills how he climbed out of early mistakes.
“ Many people … have setbacks,” he said.“ We allow those things to hinder us from creating success … When I wrote this book, it was to encourage people that it truly doesn’ t matter how you start … you can overcome those things.” What’ s next is scale with purpose.“ My goal is to really get my Justin Ford Real Estate Team established,” he said, citing a Director of Operations hire and a new inside sales manager.“ Our goal is to go from 200 to 1,000 in our eXp network … I look at real estate as a vehicle to reach people and do ministry.”
The work, as always, begins at 8 am, handset in hand. The message hasn’ t changed since his mentor Jeff Glover pulled him into highaccountability prospecting: master the basics, do them daily, and let the compound effect handle the rest.
“ If you do it right … it’ s going to create a lot of opportunities for you,” Ford said.
In addition to being topproducing real estate professionals, Joy and Justin have successfully purchased and rehabbed numerous properties for profit in the Metro Detroit area.
