2 . Has there been a rise in the number of loadshedding related claims being rejected by Insurance Companies in general ?
Two common situations when loadshedding leads to claims are , when power is switched back on and power surges damage electronic equipment , and when traffic lights are out and there is a vehicle accident due to traffic rules not being clear . These claims would only be rejected if the items are not correctly insured ( specified if needed or noted at all ) or if the insured acted in a reckless way causing damage that could have been prevented . So , in short , the rejection rate on these claims is really small and did not move due to an increase in loadshedding .
3 . What are some of the reasons that loadshedding claims are being rejected ?
It is important to understand what is covered in terms of loadshedding . If loadshedding leads to an accident , or a power surge damaged equipment such an event ( which is unforeseen ) would be covered . In a case where refrigerated items goes bad due to the refrigerator not working , the event is not covered because the loadshedding wasn ’ t unforeseen . The merits of each claim is critical here , and it would be impossible to cover every eventuality . It may be worthwhile to say that a 4-hour loadshedding stint is unlikely to cause refrigerated stock to deteriorate , however , loadshedding could lead to local sub-station failure which again would be seen as unexpected
