P am Golding, founder and now Life President of the globally recognised and locally celebrated Pam Golding Property Group, is not only an icon in the property industry and a powerful, positive role model for women and young South African entrepreneurs, she is internationally acknowledged as one of the world’s leading businesswomen. Pam Golding Properties was launched in the challenging year of 1976 with virtually no capital, no leads, no infrastructure and just one sales assistant. Infused with Pam’s ethos, unerring talent for successfully matching buyers and sellers, graceful style, networking skills and passion for property, the Pam Golding brand today remains associated with the highest levels of professionalism, client service, ethics, leadership and innovation. Of great importance to her, in recent years Mrs Golding’s role has evolved beyond the business of property into one of an ambassadorial nature as a global networker and facilitator, encompassing both the promotion of South Africa and its diversity of investment opportunities to the world at large. Over the years she has been honoured for her leadership skills and personal achievements with an impressive array of national and international awards – presented by her peers and the business sector. INVESTMENT PHILOSOPHY Where were you born and where did you grow up and go to school? I was born in Umtata in the Transkei and was educated there until the last two years of high school when I attended Collegiate in Port Elizabeth as a boarder. My years in Umtata were wonderful, there was only one street, we knew everyone and they were all so friendly. What did you study and where did your career begin? In 1948 I obtained a BA degree majoring in English and Music, obtaining a distinction in Psychology at UCT Did you always know that you would be in this line of work? No. My first job was as personal assistant to the Student Advisor, Dr Oswald Black at the (then) University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg. Thereafter I went to Cape Town and sold memberships to the Junior Literary Society, which entitled members to 12 volumes of books called “The Treasure Casket”. From the commission I earned I managed to pay for my mother and I to go to England on the Union Castle Line and we travelled all over Europe together! So I did know that I was confident and successful in sales. What inspires you? Success and people – I am passionate about people, enjoy a challenge, am proudly South African and have enjoyed creating partnerships and long lasting relationships with people, based on loyalty, respect and honesty. Who have been the people in your life who have had the most profound influence on you and why? www.reimag.co.za Infused with Pam’s ethos, unerring talent for successfully matching buyers and sellers, graceful style, networking skills and passion for property, the Pam Golding brand today remains associated with the highest levels of professionalism, client service, ethics, leadership and innovation. “My parents prioritised the values important in a small community such as discipline, respect, high standards and strong principles and reared my brothers and I accordingly. In fact, I owe the values that the Pam Golding brand is built on to them - values such as honesty, integrity, service excellence and caring – these principles supported by a strong sense of energy and passion for what I and we do at PGP.” SEPTEMBER 2015 SA Real Estate Investor 13
