RESIDENTIAL
Q. Please tell us about your first property investment,
how you financed it, if you still own it and what you
learnt from that experience.
A I bought my first property, which was a house,
in 2009. I financed it with a loan. Once I had
paid it off I didn’t close the bond – I used the
money from the bond to buy another property.
And I still own the house. I have learnt that
sometimes location isn’t everything and it is
important to be willing to take risks.
Q. How do you select your properties?
A I prefer to invest in student residencies as
there will always be a need for student
accommodation. I look at areas closest to where
students want and need to be.
Q. How do you finance your properties?
A Some of the properties were paid with loans
and others were paid with some of the money
out of my loan accounts.
Q. Do you manage your properties yourself, do you
have a management team or do you use a rental
management agent?
Q. What advice do you have for other young people who
want to start investing in property? What do they
need to learn, understand and do?
A I hire a rental agent to handle the leasing and
source and manage the tenants. I am however
involved in the maintenance of the properties.
A They need to do as much research as possible
– they need to understand the property market
and they need to take calculated risks.
Q. What are your future plans in respect of your
property portfolio?
Q. W hat motivates you?
A I have started looking at commercial property,
although I don’t want to do anything yet as I am
still learning about it. I want to be 100% sure
before I invest in anything as complex.
Q. Do you have any role models or mentors in the
property industry? Who did you learn the most from?
A I have learnt a lot about property from my
friend Harael Salkow as well as Sisa Ngebulana.
Q. How has property investment changed your life?
A It has definitely put my mind at ease, as I know
it is there and provides a constant income.
