can share ideas and possibly even collaborate on
projects.”
Steven Harris of 75 Harrington Street stresses that
networking and collaboration between co-workers is of
prime importance to the success of a co-working space.
“It is about building a community of practice,”
Harris says. “Lots of landlords can set up a co-working
space, but not everyone can build a community. This
is what differentiates a co-working success story from
other shared spaces.
“In other words, it is up to the owner of a coworking space, to network among those who rent
space, and encourage them to engage with the rest of
the community and offer their services.”
La Macchina Workspace at 84 Shortmarket Street
is located above The House of Machines, the latter
itself already a collaborative space that opened in
August 2013 housing a café and bar, a motorbike shop
and a men’s fashion outlet.
“The shared 10-desk workspace houses graphic
designers, spatial design agents, culinary experts and
interior designers and was sort of a natural progression.
It was originally our meeting room and workspace, and
then friends started moving in. As we acquired the top
floor and moved our own office upstairs, the middle
floor naturally filled up with like minded individuals,”
says Jolize Pienaar.
Meanwhile, Alan Alston of No80 Hout Street set
up a co-working loft space which can accommodate
24 people in June 2014 after finding premises he and
his partner really wanted for their own business: “There
was no way we could cover the rent on our own, so we
made a plan.”

The Inner City Ideas Cartel (ICIIC), owned by
Schuyler Vorster, is located at 71 Waterkant Street, with
a diverse range of co-workers - from small law firms
and PR practitioners, to IT specialists, recruitment
agencies and those involved in advertising. The concept
has been so successful that another one offering 1 000
m2 is opening in Loop Street in August 2015. The key
to success is that, “You need to have a service orientated
attitude. It is your responsibility to help people work
better,” Vorster says.
