Educational and training requirements Do I need to study to become an estate agent? Yes, you do. You can study at various educational institutions. Distance learning through the University of South Africa (UNISA) or other institutions is a popular option. Qualifications include a National Diploma (N.Dip) in Real Estate or Property Marketing, or a Technical Degree (B.Tech) in Real Estate. Full-time, part-time and distance-learning options are available at various educational institutions. Like all Degree and Diploma courses you need a National Senior Certificate (Matric) to apply for the course. Recommended Matric subjects include Languages, Economics, Business Studies and Accounting. The Institute of Estate Agents of Southern Africa (IEASA), the National Property Academy (NPA) and the South African Real Estate Agency (SAREA) also offer regular courses and workshops. According to the Educational Requirements promulgated on 15th July 2008, you must now do a Further Education and Training Course (FETC) in Real Estate, National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 4 or an equivalent Degree or Diploma qualification. This qualification will serve as an entry requirement for a full-time 12 month internship in the property industry. This internship will be done under the mentorship of an experienced senior estate agent. Once the internship is complete you will then have to pass an estate agents board examination called the Professional Designate Exam (PDE). You are then required to register with the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB) as a ‘non-principal’ or ‘intern’ estate agent and the Institute of Estate Agents of Southern Africa (IEASA), before you start working at an estate agency. Once registered, you will be given a Fidelity Fund Certificate. When your internship is complete and you have been registered as a ‘Non-principal’ agent and then a ‘Principal’ agent you can work at a real estate agency or work as a property developer. A new Fundamental Management Programme (NQF Level 7) is being proposed for senior Principal estate agents. When you have been working in the profession for many years you can become a self-employed, real estate entrepreneur and run your very own estate agency.
