wonderful feeling to pass
all of this onto my kids who
were thrilled to read The
Hobbit with me twice over
the past two years as we
prepped for the first two
installments of the movie.
It is likely we will read
again this summer in
anticipation for There and
Back Again. So, yes, this is
a watch and read!
4. The Hunger Games. I
added this one because my
kiddo loves the movies.
The books are also on our
to do list for the summer –
much to my dismay. I've
tried to read the books
several times and I just
cannot get into them. I
dislike the style for starters
and it goes downhill from
there but a promise is a
promise and my daughter is
incredibly excited. The
movies on the other hand, I
found enjoyable. My
kiddos love them and I
consequently have seen
them enough to recite some
lines. In my opinion, watch
the movies and forget the
books.
5. Where the Wild Things
Are. I'm throwing this in
for good measure. I read
this book to my kids before
they could even read. It
was a favorite for all of us
and when the movie came
out we were some of the
first to see it. Color us
disappointed when it was
deep and heavy with a lot
of emotion the kids were
too young to understand.
We have watched it since
and I found that all three of
us had a greater
appreciation for it the
second (third and fourth)
time(s) through. There was
a certain brilliance to the
film that captured things
never seen in the book.
While the book was a light
journey into make-believeland, the movie touched on
things that only people with
specific life experiences
could relate to. When I first
walked out of the theater I
would not have suggested it
to anybody, now that we've
watched it again with new
life experiences, I would
recommend it to some
people but perhaps not so
much to others. The book,
well, the book I think
everybody should read to a
kid at some point in time.
That's it for this month's
Watch it or Wreck it. As
always, I hope you enjoyed
it and I look forward to next
month! Violet Patterson,
