This music video is not the first to influence a culture of rape nor will it be the last. The music video, 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke, starts off when Robin Thicke sees a girl who has interest in him and attempts to real her in. One thing to notice is that every girl in this music video is half naked while the men are all dressed like their out at the club. One of the beginning lines of the music video occurs when Thicke approaches the girl and drops the line, "ok now he was close, tried to domesticate you, but you're an animal, baby it's in your nature." The video continues with a combination of: pursuing the girl whispering, "I know you want it," followed by the meowing of various girls, and a continued theme of pouring drinks for the already intoxicated female. Finally, an important trend appears when the girl's genitalia is wrapped in plastic which coincides with the lyrics, " you're a good girl, can't let it get passed me. you're far from plastic." If you didn't already know, the entire video is about convincing a girl to have sex followed by an immense lack of personal space from Robin Thicke. Much like advertisements, music videos are purposed to sell a product. Obviously part of this product is the song, however, a big part of the product being sold is Thicke himself. It is obvious that he is using this video to construct himself as man candy and master of picking up females. He does this construction of himself in a specific way, which not only highlights his apparent disreard of respect for women, but also, his behavior towards them as an object of desire rather than a
person.
