Rape Culture Reinforced by the Media 16 | Page 13

Call me a cynic but that phrase does not exactly encompass the notion of consent in sexual

activity. Seriously, this

song is disgusting

although

admittedly very catchy.

Although the purpose

of this song may in fact be

to attract attention from

viewers, the underlying

message is that women

are

objects of desire that can

be tricked or drugged into

having sex. The impact

this type of message is

leaving, whether intentional

or not, is that rape and violence is a sexual activity that is condoned. I believe that this song does promote rape and is not alone in doing so.

Erin Burnett: Thank you Stephanie I appreciate the support, I think we can all agree that 'Blurred Lines' is a somewhat offensive video intended to capture the attention of a young audience. However, artists should be aware of the repercussion this message may have on men watching. This video technically reinforces many aspects of rape culture that occur in our society today. I think it may be a good idea for artists to

reevaluate the purpose

of their music videos.

Thank you for joining us

here today on our

review of the music video

"Blurred lines'.

I will now send it to you

Garry for the weather

report.
