improvements were obtained with iterative reconstruction software or the use of artificial intelligence . Some new kind of detectors and guiding tools were also highly efficient in reducing dose to patients in interventional radiology ( Teriitehau et al ., 2020 );
– Awareness level of operators from medical imaging or interventional radiology departments can be improved . There are very contrasted situations , several authors being still at the stage of observation ( Shubayr et al ., 2024 ), even in the case of the use on non-ionizing radiations ( Forster et al ., 2024 );
– Diagnosis reference levels ( DRLs ) are a powerful tool for the optimization of practices . However , their use is also very variable according to the countries . Some countries such as Morocco are conducting important efforts to develop local DRLs ( El Mansouri et al ., 2022 : El Fahssi et al ., 2024 ), especially in the paediatric domain ( Khajmi et al ., 2023 ), while other countries are yet able to propose DRL analyses at the national level ( Nassar et al ., 2023 ). However , the necessary condition is that there are enough medical physicists available to develop theses DRLs ! Vietnam authors thus proposes a study to evaluate the urgent needs in medical physicists , especially in medical imaging services ( Nguyen , 2024 ). And there is a need in these countries to demonstrate the efficacy of DRL implementation on patient dose reduction on the long term .
All these studies demonstrate that radiation protection needs to be continuously developed . In this context , it is of outstanding importance that the revision process of the general recommendations of ICRP ( Clement et al ., 2022 ) takes into account the diversity of situations and that these future recommendations remain adapted to the field ( Bertho et Bourguignon , 2023 ).
