ASHRAE Column WHY JOIN THE LOCAL ASHRAE CHAPTER? The South African ASHRAE Chapter was recently established and has been active since, reaching out to industry as well as relevant educational institutions to share the benefits of joining this global association and to grow membership. I n South Africa, it has always been possible to be a member of the society, but now the opportunity exists to take full benefit of what ASHRAE can offer as part of the South African Chapter, which was established on 27 July 2018. WHY JOIN? The main benefits are access to information and becoming part of the global ASHRAE family. It also allows more direct contact with established engineers in the industry and, without a doubt, building of a career based on knowledge. Benefits also include: • Subscription to the ASHRAE Journal and quarterly High Performing Buildings (HPB) magazine. • Free online access to the Technology Portal, as well as Science and Technology for the Built Environment. • Discounts on publications, courses, standards, and conference registrations. CALLING ALL STUDENTS Student membership is only USD21 per year and ASHRAE is currently approaching universities and technikons as part of a drive to attract more young people into the association. Once students become members of ASHRAE, they can form a Student Activity Branch and that will lead to more benefits. Being part of an official student branch will pave the way for students to apply for scholarships, if the university is accredited as below: • The programme is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). • The programme is accredited by an agency outside the US that is a signatory of the Washington Accord, the Sydney Accord, or has a signed Memorandum of Understanding with ABET. DONATIONS FOR BURSARIES ASHRAE SA would also like to introduce bursaries for students hoping to enter the local HVAC&R industry. As such, they are asking for donations from industry to assist with this cause. For more information, or to donate, contact the ASHRAE SA student chair, Adelé van der Walt, at bogsac@ashraesa.org. RACA HUMOUR - A DAY OFF Two factory workers are talking. The one says, “I can make the boss give me the day off.” The other replies, “And how would you do that?” The boss then says, “You’ve been working so much that you’ve gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off.” The first says, “Just wait and see.” He then hangs upside-down from the ceiling. The other worker starts to follow him, and the boss says, “Where are you going?” The boss comes in and says, “What are you doing?” The second worker says, “I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark.” RACA The first worker replies, “I’m a light bulb.” www.hvacronline.co.za RACA Journal I January 2019 75
