The plastic suction and return water lines linking a standard-sized
electrolysis unit to a cooling tower sump can be seen in Figure 2.
Electrodes are available in various shapes and sizes according to
the required rates of calcium carbonate capture for each water
circuit and are easily removable for cleaning off accumulated
scaling deposits. An example of a cathode section of a rod and
tube electrode assembly on which precipitated calcium carbonate
has become several centimetres thick, is shown in Figure 3.

Electrode sizing is calculated according to water hardness so
that scaled electrodes can be removed for cleaning and replaced
with cleaned ones during regular scheduled services. Suppliers of
electrolysis water treatment equipment claim that their units not
only prevent scaling by cathodic reduction of dissolved carbonates
in circulating water to below concentrations where precipitation
occurs, but will also remove any existing scale. These claims
will be examined in more detail on a quantitative basis in the
forthcoming issue of RACA Journal. RACA
