Learning with Girl Guides Australia
Girl Guides Australia is broadening the view of what constitutes further and personal development for our adult members. Previously further development consisted of completing face-to-face training and Further Development modules under the Australian Adult Leadership Program. During the review of adult Learning and Development within GGA, it was discovered that Leaders are learning in many different ways. Leaders learn more from trying out activities within their Unit, networking with other Leaders and surfing the web for ideas than they do from completing Further Development modules.
In order to better develop the skills and confidence of our adult leadership base, and to fulfil the goal of becoming“ THE” organisation for girls and young women in Australia, we are encouraging our Leaders and adult members to look wide for personal development opportunities.
Leaders will now be encouraged to keep a learning log as a record of any learning activities that enhance their development in a leadership role. Such activities might include:
• Undertaking new activities with the Guide Unit
• Online activities, i. e., web surfing for resources and information on youth development
• District / Region / State / National / International roles or events as either a participant or an organiser
• Committee roles
• Projects such as those of a service and advocacy nature
• Trainings, seminars, conferences, workshops— face to face or online, within Guiding or external
• Gaining outdoor qualifications
• … the list is endless
The types of information that Leaders will need to record in their learning log will be such things as the date and type of activity, what they learnt from it and how that learning can be applied to their role as a Leader.
Templates and further details about learning logs will be available in August, so stay tuned!
