Student support

Studying at an overseas university can be a daunting experience , but with close support , especially in the early stages , students feel very welcome and comfortable in their new home in Gozo . Available from both the medical school in Malta and the wider university , our pastoral support unit ( supported by dedicated clinicians ) can help you get the most out of life .

Here ’ s what you need , straight from the SAPS team themselves .

What is SAPS ?

“ SAPS ( Student Academic Pastoral Support ) is a team of professionals who will provide essential services throughout your studies in Malta , including things like wellbeing sessions , guidance and one-to-one support . We are very good at pointing you to internal and external resources services and volunteering opportunities in the community . We enjoy going above and beyond for our students , to support your transition into Gozo and guide you through your journey with us , so never hesitate to get in touch , no matter how small your query .”

Aimee Dent , Head of SAPS

What do you have to say to students just starting out ?

“ If you decide to take on this incredible journey , you will most certainly create many connections and memories ! However , every great journey has its moments of hardships , and you may experience emotional distress or worry . Just know that SAPS will be here for you ! Your mental wellbeing is incredibly important to us . So , please do not hesitate to contact me should you ever feel the need , even if you ’ ve applied and are yet to arrive !”

Malcolm Casha , SAPS Mental Health Officer

Parents have their own support network where they keep in contact and update each other .

How can students thrive at Queen Mary , Malta ?

“ The key is to look after yourself . Any time I ’ ve seen students struggling it ’ s because they have their heads buried too far in their books . You ’ ve got to talk to people . You just must look after yourself , take breaks , go and do things randomly , take a complete day off and not feel guilty about it . That ’ s the key – and thankfully there are lots of opportunities to get out and about . But , if things do get too much , let SAPS know as soon as you can . We ’ re always here and eager to help , even if it means a late night .”

David Sunnucks , Head of Anatomy , Head of Year 3 and Deputy Student Advisor ( SAPS ).
