A day in the life of a lecturer

Embracing Maltese culture with lecturer Adam Harvey

Adam Harvey joined Queen Mary , Malta Campus for a different kind of medical career . He was after a place where he could really connect with his students and leave his mark . And guess what ? The location was a major win too ! Malta was a perfect fit , letting Adam dive into his passion beyond medicine – language and culture . It ’ s like combining the best of both worlds .

“ Medical Maltese enhances the placement experience . Learning Maltese also enables you to observe cultural nuances in ways people interact with healthcare . Learning a new language is tough , but it will be worth it when you realise how much this helps build rapport with patients and colleagues in your clinical years , and more broadly as you seek a career .”

Maltese language courses

While Maltese language lessons are not part of the MBBS curriculum , the university has a selection of courses available to those who would like to seize the opportunity with both hands . The Maltese courses are taught through a mixture of lectures , workshops and practical assignments , with guidance from Maltese language teachers and clinicians .

The University has developed three qualifications in Maltese that are accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority ( MFHEA ).

These are :

• An Award in Maltese as a Foreign Language ;

• An Award in Medical Maltese ( Part 1 );

• An Award in Medical Maltese ( Part 2 ).

“ Students have this rare opportunity to be in a country where the locals also speak fluent English .

The language is rooted in Arabic and Italian , so that opens opportunities for your career , whether you wanted to work in the Middle East or Italy ”
