Affirmative and Negative Words
In Spanish it is sometimes possible (and necessary) to use two negative expressions in the same
sentence. The following chart contains a list of common affirmative expressions along with their
negative counterparts.

Note: The words alguno/a (some, any) and ninguno/a (none, not any) are sometimes used
as pronouns.

When combining negative expressions in one sentence in Spanish, it is often possible to
use one of the negative expressions before the verb and another negative expression (and
sometimes even more than one) after the verb. However, no, nada, nadie, nunca, tampoco,
and forms of ninguno may be used alone, before the verb, without the word no.
No voy nunca a las tiendas.
Nunca voy a las tiendas. I never go to the stores.
No estoy haciendo nada tampoco.
Tampoco estoy haciendo nada. I am not doing anything either.
When nadie or a form of ninguno are direct objects referring to people, they require the
personal a.
No veo a nadie aquí.
No veo a ningún amigo aquí.
