Talking About the Past: Preterite Tense of -er and -ir Verbs

Form the preterite tense of regular -er and -ir verbs by removing the last two letters from the
infinitive and adding the same set of endings for either type of verb.

Note: Stem changes that occur in the present tense for -ar and -er verbs do not occur in the
preterite tense. However, -ir verbs that have a stem change in the present tense require
a different stem change in the preterite tense for Ud., él, ella, Uds., ellos, and ellas. This
second change is shown in parentheses after infinitives in this book. Some verbs that follow
this pattern include dormir (ue, u), pedir (i, i), preferir (ie, i), repetir (i, i), and sentir (ie, i).
The stem changes do not interfere with the verb endings.
