ENVIRONMENT IN FOCUS
audit score, the ASPASA auditors utilise the
opportunity of the assessment to include
awareness and best practice training.
The ‘system’ audit is conducted by
Colleen Cluett, who has conducted close
to 300 such audits in the industry to date.
The system audit has been based on ISO
14001 since 2008 and has been adapted to
cover the requirements of the South African
surface mining industry. In 2017, it was
updated to conform to the latest version
of ISO 14001- ISO 14001:2015. With all
members audited against this version in
that year.
The ASPASA About Face Audit and ISHE
safety and health audits have, over the years,
demonstrated a significant and continued
performance improvement in the scores
obtained by all participating members as
summarised in the graphic and table below.
Typically the ASPASA About Face audit
finishes at about 17:00. Following a close-
out meeting, the auditees are given a CD
that contains copies of a variety of relevant
information and documents including
the full training session. Comments from
auditees commonly thank the auditors
for their contribution to the operations
continued environmental performance
improvement.

“ASPASA audits are not typical audits as defined in
standard definitions of audits. ASPASA, as an industry
member association, requires that the audits assist
members in their attainment of the environmental policy
goal of continued performance improvement.”
