“Our biggest seller is
our sand products. Our
model has always been to
deliver premium products
timeously. We were also
one of the first to wash our
sand, and it’s all shaped,
which was different to our
competitors.”

maintenance programme is strict. We
monitor fuel consumption closely to deliver
material to customers as cost-effectively
as possible. We buy fuel in bulk and put it
through numerous filters to bring it down
to two microns to prolong the life of the
vehicle. We have satellite tracking on our
vehicles to keep drivers to the designated
route, as well as monitor their driving
habits.” Its Scania trucks have an internal
system that awards the operator a daily score
based on his or her driving behaviour, and
Botha says the drivers compete to get the
best score.
“The higher they score, the better they feel
about themselves,” says Botha. It monitors
harsh braking, speeding, and more.
Future plans
With the mine having a lifespan of more
than 30 years left, management has a
business plan that anticipates growth,
including upgrading the crusher plant.
This will enable it to increase production
and to introduce a second shift, which will
work only from the intermediate stockpile
and so require no loading and hauling
during its shift. It will also be upgrading
its sand wash plant and installing a small
VSI plant, capable of producing a premium
-4mm washed crusher sand. This product is
earmarked for the roof tile manufacturing
market.
