FLU SHOT CLINIC
The influenza (flu) virus is a contagious respiratory illness and can result
in hospitalization or death. It is spread when someone infected with the
influenza virus coughs or sneezes and then it is inhaled by someone nearby.
It is also spread by coming into contact with infected respiratory droplets
deposited on inanimate objects, which are touched by someone who then
touches his/her nose or mouth.
As part of UAB Medicine’s mission to improve the health and well-being
of the community and its workforce, an interdisciplinary team worked
to create a dedicated and centralized space to expand access for flu
vaccine administration, reduce the barrier of prevention, and increase the
compliance rate. The interdisciplinary team was comprised of the following:
• Ambulatory Access & Access Informatics
• Clinical Informatics
• Department of Hospital Revenue & Business Operations
• Equipment and Resource Management
• Facilities Management
• Health Services Information Services
• Marketing & Communications
• Materials Management
• Nursing Leadership & Nursing Resource Management
• Office of Patient Experience and Engagement
• Pharmacy Services
• Provider Scheduling Management
• Quality and Patient Safety
• The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital Administration & Project Management
On Sept. 5, 2017, The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital (TKC) Flu Shot Clinic
opened. The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 am–5 pm and
staffed with registered nurses, certified medical assistants, and a patient
encounter specialist. The clinic has four treatment bays to increase
throughput, with an average turnaround time of five minutes or less.
The TKC Flu Shot Clinic continues to abate flu-related illness by providing
convenient and efficient access to the flu vaccine. The clinic remained
open through March 31, 2018, to facilitate UAB Medicine’s commitment to
fostering the health and well-being of the community.
