An unexpected treat was an outstanding performance by Sebastian Berg of the Adagio from Bach’ s Violin Sonata in G minor. Sebastian performed with immense skill and a beautiful freedom of bow.
Jamal Sutton, ever the perfect accompanist, played Bach on the five year old organ and later the jazz standard, Round Midnight, on the piano to add that touch of smooth transition to the more modern part of the programme.
For a parent, a very proud evening; for a parishioner and visitor, a beautiful and awe-inspiring evening. Quiristers serving the community in the way they do best... the gift of song.

Music on a Summer’ s Evening Saturday 11 June 2016
On a perfect June evening a concert was held in the recently refurbished New Hall to mark Ralph Townsend’ s retirement as Headmaster of Winchester College. Chapel Choir was joined by the choir and orchestra of EC4 Music, who draw singers and musicians from over one hundred firms and organisations, mostly based in the EC4 postcode area of London.
EC4 Music conducted by Tim Crosley sang A Hymn to St Cecilia by Britten and Three Shakespeare Songs by Vaughan Williams, both unaccompanied. They were then joined after the interval by the orchestra for Come ye Sons of Art by Purcell and JS Bach’ s Magnificat in D major. Our thanks go to them for making the journey down to Winchester and also to the very fine soloists.
Chapel Choir sang the very beautiful Bach motet Komm, Jesu, komm, accompanied by organist Jamal Sutton. As always the audience were delighted by the exceptionally high standard achieved by the Quiristers, the youngest of whom is just ten years old.
It was a wonderfully elegant mix of sublime music, and the concert tickets supported the Wessex Chalk Stream & Rivers Trust, a charity working to protect and maintain the beautiful River Itchen which flows through the College and its grounds.
