GARRY BOWS OUT A WINNER By David Newbery contributions to make.” he is head teaching professional.” Garry Calder is, by all accounts, one of the best teaching professionals in the business. The award-winning coach recently stepped down as Golf Queensland’s head coach, a title he is averse to, after almost 10 years. Tony Meyer is his replacement. Still, Calder’s contribution to golf in Queensland is immeasurable. Golf Queensland CEO Lindsay Ellis was quick to praise Calder’s efforts. A quiet, unassuming man, Calder, the Queensland PGA Teacher of the Year in 1995 and 2003, has made hugely significant contributions to the game in Queensland. He is a focussed man, who works hard at his craft and at refining the skills and minds of his protégés. “I don’t see myself as a head coach – never have, never will,” Calder said bluntly. “It’s the same at Indooroopilly Golf Club. I might be the oldest coach and loosely in charge of looking at programs and writing programs, but everyone has “Garry played a key role in the success Queensland achieved at the national level,” he said. “On behalf of Golf Queensland I would like to thank him for his continued involvement in developing some of the best players Queensland has produced. Garry has helped lead Queensland to success and will continue to do so in his role at Indooroopilly where He has a nimble mind, the ability to lead and has a knack for looking hard into the hazy future and figuring out better ways to teach and communicate. Still, Calder felt it was time for the “old boy” to step down. Calder works hard at his craft and at refining the skills and minds of his protégés. 18 Q Golf Online Winter 2012 www.golfqueensland.org.au
