course they know what the story is and
they play by the rules and the etiquette of
the game.”
There is little doubt that The Jack Newton
Junior Golf Foundation has had a great
run of success and leads the way in
comparison to other such foundations in
Australia. Did Newton have any thoughts
as to just why that was the case?
“I guess I am passionate about it and
also that I chose to be hands on and I
don’t think Greg or Graham have been,”
he added referring to the roles Graham
Marsh and Greg Norman take in their
respective foundations in Western
Australia and Queensland. “You learn a
lot of things along the way by being hands
on.”
“I think also the main thing I have always
tried to do is to let the kids have some fun
and I think that has been very important
in its success.”
“Initially there was a lot of suspicion I
guess,” added Newton when asked as to
the relationship between his organisation
and the governing body of golf in NSW
when he first established the Foundation.
“But the way I structured our Board
was, firstly, for me to remain hands on
organisationally rather than in a coaching
role and to include members from the
various associations within NSW so
they could then allay any concerns or
suspicions.”
